Terpene Series: Menthol

Menthol is a monoterpene that naturally occurs in trace amounts in cannabis, as well as prominently in other plants, such as peppermint and spearmint. Menthol is known for its cooling effects and is one of the most well-known and widely used terpenes in both organic and synthetic form, popular in oral hygiene, medicinal, and tobacco products.

Menthol is a terpene that occurs in cannabis and plants of the mint family.

Menthol is not a prominent terpene in cannabis but tends to manifest in Kush strains. Smoking these strains may provide a slight numbing or cooling sensation in the mouth, but they usually don’t contain enough menthol for any significant medicinal effects.

Studies show menthol’s efficacy as an analgesic, or pain reliever, and it is also popular in aromatherapy oils like peppermint and eucalyptus.

For non-smokers and smokers alike, the most common source of menthol in everyday life is found in cough syrups, lozenges, and toothpaste. Menthol is also an ingredient in some pain-relieving ointments and nasal inhalers. Hard candies, breath fresheners, and other sweets made with mint flavoring will give you a taste of menthol. In natural medicine, some people apply a few drops of peppermint oil to the temples for headache relief. Possessing a lower content of menthol, spearmint oil is sometimes used to alleviate an upset stomach.

The boiling point of menthol is 214.6 degrees Celsius.
